Join us for Dogs with Human Names meet up! Did you know? The first dog known to have been given a human name was reportedly “Rin Tin Tin.” This famous canine was a male German Shepherd rescued during World War I by an American soldier named Lee Duncan in France. Duncan found Rin Tin Tin as a puppy in a bombed-out dog kennel on September 15, 1918.
Rin Tin Tin was named after a French puppet called “Rintintin,” which was a popular good luck charm among French children during the war. Duncan brought Rin Tin Tin back to the United States after the war and turned him into a Hollywood star. Rin Tin Tin became one of the most famous and beloved canine actors in the history of film and television, starring in numerous silent films and later transitioning to the era of talkies.
